NEW DELHI, May 15: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant on Friday remarked that some unemployed youngsters “become media, social media and RTI activists” and begin attacking the system, likening them to “cockroaches” during a hearing in the Supreme Court.

The observations were made by a bench comprising CJI Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi while reprimanding a lawyer seeking designation as a senior advocate. The bench expressed displeasure over what it described as the petitioner’s persistent pursuit of the designation.

The court said society already had enough “parasites” who target and criticise the system, and questioned the petitioner on whether he intended to join them.

“The entire world may be eligible to become senior (advocate), but at least you are not entitled,” the bench told the petitioner lawyer during the proceedings.
