NEW DELHI, Aug 17: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday spoke to Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah following a cloudburst and landslide in Kathua district, assuring full support from the Centre.
At least seven people were killed and five others injured in two separate incidents triggered by heavy overnight rains in the district. The calamity struck Jodh Ghati village of Rajbagh and Janglote area early Sunday.
“Spoke with the Lieutenant Governor and Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir regarding the cloudburst in Kathua. Relief and rescue operations are underway by the local administration and NDRF teams have been rushed to the site. Assured every support from the Modi government. We stand firmly behind our sisters and brothers of J&K,” Shah posted on X.
The fresh tragedy comes just days after a devastating cloudburst in Chisoti village of Kishtwar on August 14, which left 60 people dead and over 100 injured. Authorities said 82 persons—81 pilgrims and a CISF jawan—are still reported missing.
Rescue and relief efforts are continuing in both districts as authorities brace for more rains in the region.
