SRINAGAR: Following the JKRTC fleet’s apple consignments from Sopore fruit mandi, a 14-coach goods train will now operate directly from Sopore to outside markets, officials said.
The step comes after weeks of transport shortages and soaring freight rates that left thousands of apple boxes stranded at Asia’s second-largest fruit mandi.
A senior official said loading at Sopore Railway Station will begin tomorrow in coordination with Northern Railways. “This first-ever direct service from Sopore aims to clear the backlog and offer growers a faster, cheaper alternative to road transport,” the official added.
