SRINAGAR, Sept 3: Authorities on Wednesday sounded a flood alert after the Jhelum crossed the danger mark at Sangam, though levels at Ram Munshi Bagh remain normal.Chief Engineer Irrigation and Flood Control (IFC), Er Showkat Hussain, said water at Sangam is rising by nearly 1.5 feet per hour. “All teams are on high alert, weak spots are being monitored, and sandbags have been placed,” he said, adding that a minor breach at Vecho Nala in Kulgam has already been plugged.Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a review meeting with divisional and district officials, directing them to stay vigilant and respond swiftly. Senior leaders, including Nasir Aslam Wani and Sakina Itoo, are expected to visit Vecho Nala for an assessment.
Authorities cautioned that water levels may rise further with ongoing rainfall and urged people to stay away from water bodies.
