Srinagar, Aug 19: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday said the government’s focus in Kishtwar is on tracing the missing, supporting affected families, and taking expert advice to prevent future disasters.
He said nearly 70 people remain untraced after the cloudburst, with little hope of survival. “Our effort is to recover bodies and hand them over to families for proper last rites,” Omar said, clarifying that the tragedy was caused by a cloudburst, not glacial lake bursts.
A team of experts has been tasked with identifying vulnerable areas and suggesting safety measures. On education, Omar admitted shortcomings in infrastructure and teacher availability in remote areas but assured improvements, including modern classrooms and better facilities.
“History should not be distorted for politics. Governments change, but facts must remain for children to learn,” he added.Responding to criticism, Omar remarked, “Their job is to oppose, ours is to work. We will keep engaging with people.”On elections, he said his party is ready to contest upcoming block polls.
