NEW YORK/WASHINGTON, May 8: U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern over escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, urging both nations to de-escalate and cease retaliatory actions. Offering to mediate, Trump said he would be willing to help if needed.

Following recent air and artillery strikes by the Indian military targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Pakistan’s Punjab province, Pakistan responded with one of the most intense rounds of artillery and mortar shelling in years, targeting forward villages along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.

“Oh, it’s so terrible,” President Trump said when asked about the situation. “My position is—I get along with both. I know both very well, and I want to see them work it out. I want to see them stop, and hopefully they can stop now. They’ve gone tit for tat, so hopefully they can stop now.”

Reiterating U.S. relations with both nations, Trump added, “We get along with both countries very well. If I can do anything to help, I will be there.”

Trump’s remarks reflect his administration’s consistent stance of encouraging dialogue between India and Pakistan while positioning the United States as a potential facilitator—though India has traditionally opposed third-party mediation in its bilateral affairs with Pakistan.
