Derabassi (Mohali), Apr 29 — A wave of grief has engulfed the town of Derabassi in Punjab’s Mohali district after the tragic death of Vanshika Saini, a 20-year-old student and daughter of local Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Davinder Saini, who was pursuing her studies in Canada.

Vanshika had moved to Ottawa in 2023 with dreams of building a successful future. She was preparing to appear for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam on April 26. However, her sudden disappearance on the eve of the exam and the subsequent confirmation of her death have left her family in shock and demanding answers.

Speaking to the media, Davinder Saini recounted the last conversation he had with his daughter. “I spoke to her on April 25 while she was on her way to work. Everything seemed normal. The next morning, I received a message that she had gone missing. Later, we were informed that she was no more. We are devastated.”

The cause and circumstances of her death have not yet been made public. The family has urged the Indian government to intervene and work closely with Canadian authorities to ensure a thorough investigation. They are also seeking urgent assistance in bringing her mortal remains back home.

“She was a bright girl with big dreams. I want the Indian government to take this matter seriously, coordinate with Canadian officials, and help us bring her body back as soon as possible. Most importantly, I demand a fair and full investigation into her death,” said Saini.

Local AAP leaders and community members have expressed their condolences and called for diplomatic action to assist the grieving family.

As of now, there has been no official statement from Canadian authorities regarding the case. Efforts are reportedly underway through consular channels to facilitate communication and provide support to the bereaved family.
