Srinagar, Apr 22: In a swift move reflecting the gravity of the situation in the Kashmir Valley, Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General MV Suchendra Kumar is en route to Srinagar from New Delhi, defence sources said on Monday.
Lt Gen Kumar, who had been attending a high-level conference in the national capital, is expected to be briefed by senior Army officials and local formation commanders about the prevailing security scenario in the Valley. The sudden development comes amid heightened concerns over recent incidents that have raised the alert level in the region.
Defence sources, while not disclosing the specifics of the emerging situation, indicated that the General’s immediate visit underscores the Army’s proactive stance in addressing evolving security challenges in Kashmir.
Over the past few weeks, the Valley has witnessed a series of developments requiring close coordination between the armed forces and intelligence agencies. The presence of the Northern Army Commander is seen as a signal of the Army’s commitment to maintaining stability and readiness on the ground.
Lt Gen Suchendra Kumar took over as Northern Army Commander in 2023 and has since been actively engaged with operational preparedness and civilian-military cooperation in Jammu and Kashmir, especially in sensitive areas prone to militant activity.
