Srinagar, Nov 15: At least nine people, including a Naib Tehsildar, were killed and 29 others sustained injuries after a powerful explosion tore through the Nowgam police station in Srinagar late last night, officials said.
According to an official, the blast was triggered by a seized explosive material that detonated inside the police station. The substance—believed to be ammonium nitrate—had recently been transported from Faridabad in Haryana after being confiscated during a joint operation by Jammu and Kashmir Police and Faridabad Police, which had uncovered an alleged terror module involving doctors.
“Most of those killed are policemen and members of the Forensic Science Laboratory team. A Naib Tehsildar and a local tailor are also among the deceased. Several of the injured are in critical condition,” the official reported.
He added that the process of identifying the victims is ongoing, as some bodies were severely charred. The explosion was so intense that body parts were found in residential areas nearly 100–200 meters away from the police station.
The injured have been shifted to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar and SKIMS Soura, while some are receiving treatment at a private hospital. (KNO)
