SRINAGAR: Hydel power generation in Jammu and Kashmir has dropped by nearly 70%, with output from locally owned plants falling by about 800–900 MW.

An official said local power generation currently ranges between 330 MW and 400 MW, far below normal levels. At the Baglihar plant, production varies between 250–380 MW, while Kishenpur and New Wanpoh plants are producing barely one MW each. Only 71 MW is being generated from Kashmir-based stations.

On Monday, Kashmir recorded a power load of 1742 MW and Jammu 1036 MW, against a forecast load of 1750 MW and a forced curtailment of 40 MW.

During the peak season, J&K usually generates over 1100 MW of hydel power out of its 1197.4 MW capacity. However, the region now relies on 85–90% coal and solar power purchased from other states.

Officials said J&K currently receives 1300 MW from the central pool and has begun power banking with other states to manage the deficit.
