SRINAGAR: The Supreme Court will hear on October 6 a petition filed by Geetanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) and seeking his immediate release.
The case, listed before Justices Aravind Kumar and NV Anjaria, questions the legality of the Ladakh administration’s order, calling it arbitrary and aimed at silencing dissent. Wangchuk, a renowned environmentalist, was detained for allegedly making “inflammatory remarks” during protests demanding statehood and Sixth Schedule safeguards for Ladakh.
Angmo’s plea contends that the NSA was invoked for political reasons and that Wangchuk’s peaceful activism poses no threat to public order or national security.
Legal observers say the court’s decision could have wide implications for the use of preventive detention laws, as rights groups and environmentalists across India rally behind Wangchuk’s case.
