SRINAGAR: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has held environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk responsible for the violent clashes that broke out in Leh on September 24, leaving four civilians dead and more than 30 security personnel injured.

In a statement cited by India Today, the ministry alleged that Wangchuk’s speeches during his hunger strike incited unrest and disrupted the ongoing dialogue between Ladakh’s leadership and the Centre.According to the MHA, violence erupted after a mob, allegedly influenced by Wangchuk’s remarks, moved from the hunger strike venue and targeted government offices, a political party headquarters, and security personnel.

Several vehicles were torched, buildings set on fire, and more than 30 police and CRPF personnel injured in the attacks. The ministry further said that police were compelled to open fire in self-defence, which resulted in civilian casualties.
