SRINAGAR: Authorities in Kulgam have intensified their crackdown on illegal mining, seizing 12 vehicles—including a JCB excavator, dumpers and tractors—used for unauthorised extraction and transportation of minerals.

The enforcement drive, supervised by District Mineral Officer (DMO) Kulgam Dar Khurshid, was conducted under the Zero Tolerance Policy issued by Deputy Commissioner Ather Amir. Multiple coordinated raids were carried out across vulnerable mining zones.

Officials said surveillance has been significantly boosted through Mine Surveillance Systems, GPS-enabled vehicle tracking and CCTV monitoring, helping curb illegal extraction and enabling quick action.

In recent days, continuous enforcement drives involving vehicle seizures, compounding and action under COM and POM have disrupted the movement of illegally mined material. The increased presence of field teams has also offered relief to locals concerned about unchecked mining.

DMO Dar Khurshid said all actions are being taken as per directions of the District Administration, reaffirming the department’s commitment to protecting natural resources and enforcing environmental regulations.
