Mumbai: Maharashtra’s political scene may witness a historic shift as speculation grows around a possible reunion between cousins Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray after nearly 20 years of estrangement. Raj Thackeray, who broke away from Shiv Sena in 2005 to establish the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), and Uddhav Thackeray, the former Chief Minister and Shiv Sena (UBT) chief, have recently dropped strong hints about a potential reconciliation, citing growing concerns over threats to Marathi identity and cultural values.

Both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress have expressed a positive outlook on the prospect of the Thackerays joining forces. A political patch-up could result in a powerful alliance against the BJP in the upcoming municipal elections in Mumbai. Leaders within the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) are reportedly optimistic about this potential alliance, recognizing its implications for Maharashtra’s power dynamics.

Signals of a Political Comeback

In separate public addresses, Raj and Uddhav Thackeray sent a clear message that Maharashtra’s welfare and the preservation of Marathi culture must take precedence over personal and political differences.

Describing his rift with Uddhav as “minor,” MNS chief Raj Thackeray said their conflict was coming at a cost to Maharashtra and its people. “Our disagreements are insignificant compared to Maharashtra’s larger interests. These divisions are affecting the Marathi community’s future. Reuniting is not difficult—it’s a matter of intent. Ego should not stand in the way when the state’s interests are at stake,” he said.

A possible reconciliation would mark a significant political shift for Raj Thackeray, especially after his open support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

BJP’s Response and Shinde Faction’s Strategy

The BJP has chosen not to oppose the idea of a Thackeray reunion, with insiders suggesting that the party is observing the developments with cautious interest. Meanwhile, the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction is reportedly working on a “Zero Formula” — a strategy that might focus on damage control and avoiding direct confrontation within the alliance.

As the civic polls approach, all eyes are on the Thackeray cousins, whose potential comeback as a united front could dramatically reshape political equations in Maharashtra.
