SRINAGAR, Aug 6: Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has called on national political parties with significant representation in Parliament to press for the restoration of J&K’s statehood during the ongoing session.
“I have written to parties with large numbers of MPs, requesting them to raise the issue of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood in Parliament so the bill is passed this session,” Abdullah said in a statement on Tuesday.
The National Conference leader stressed that the commitment to restore statehood was made not only on the floor of Parliament but also before the Supreme Court, and it was now time for the government to act on its word.
“This promise was made publicly, in Parliament, and before the Supreme Court, and must now be fulfilled,” he added.
The demand for statehood remains a key political issue in Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370 and the bifurcation of the erstwhile state into two Union Territories in August 2019.
