Guwahati, Jan 19: Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship and Minister of State for Education, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, on Monday inaugurated the IndiaSkills Regional Competition 2025–26 (North-East) at Gauhati University, Assam.
For the first time, India’s premier skilling championship is being hosted in the North-Eastern region, bringing together 162 youth from all eight North-Eastern states to compete across 26 skill categories. The initiative is being organised by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) with the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) as the implementation partner.
Addressing the gathering, Shri Chaudhary said that IndiaSkills is not just a competition but a celebration of excellence and dignity of work. He highlighted the Prime Minister’s sustained focus on the North-East and expressed confidence that youth from the region are prepared to play a leading role in India’s skilled workforce.
The Minister also stressed the importance of integrating skilling with formal education in line with NEP 2020, noting that it enhances employability, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning opportunities.
The event witnessed participation from students of ITIs and NSTIs under the Directorate General of Training, reflecting the strengthening skilling ecosystem in the region. Competition areas range from Automobile Technology, Cloud Computing, Electronics, CNC, and Welding to Hospitality, Health and Social Care, Retail, and Fashion Technology.
Notably, increased participation of women in traditionally male-dominated technical trades was observed, alongside a strong blend of digital, manufacturing, and service-oriented skills aligned with Industry 4.0.
Top performers from the regional competition will advance to the IndiaSkills National Competition, with select winners earning the opportunity to represent India at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai (September 22–27, 2026).
