Mumbai, June 9, 2025 — In a tragic incident on Monday morning, five commuters lost their lives after falling from an overcrowded local train near Mumbra in Mumbai’s suburban network. Several others sustained injuries.
The accident occurred around 9:50 a.m. on a fast local train en route from Kasara to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT). According to initial reports, the victims were among several passengers hanging onto the footboard due to severe overcrowding. A collision between bags is believed to have triggered a loss of balance, causing approximately 12 individuals to fall onto the tracks between Mumbra and Diwa stations.
“Preliminary information suggests that around eight passengers fell when their bags collided while travelling on the footboards of two local trains,” said Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.
Emergency services, including railway officials and police, responded promptly. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital, and authorities have launched a formal investigation into the cause of the mishap.
In the wake of the incident, the Railway Board announced that all new rakes currently under production for the Mumbai Suburban Railway will be equipped with automatic door-closing systems. Existing rakes in service will also be retrofitted with similar technology to enhance commuter safety.
