Mumbai, April 22, 2025 – Political talks are intensifying in Maharashtra, with speculation surrounding a potential merger between the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) led by Sharad Pawar and the faction headed by his nephew, Ajit Pawar. The discussions have raised eyebrows as recent meetings between the two leaders have sparked speculation about a shift in political allegiances in the state.
Former Member of Parliament (MP) Majeed Memon weighed in on the situation, providing his perspective on the ongoing developments. He suggested that these talks gained momentum after Raj Thackeray’s recent discussions regarding a potential alliance with Uddhav Thackeray. Memon highlighted that the possibility of the two Thackeray brothers joining forces has led to further speculation about the future of Maharashtra’s political scene, with the Pawars’ potential unity being part of the ongoing discussions.
While acknowledging the speculation, Memon expressed doubt about the likelihood of Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar formally merging their parties. “Sharad Pawar and Ajit Pawar have been meeting on and off, even during family functions. Their recent meeting can’t be likened to the political alliance between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray,” Memon stated. He pointed out that the relationship between the two Pawar leaders has largely been familial rather than purely political.
Despite his skepticism, Memon added that if the merger were to take place, it could be beneficial for both sides. However, he noted the political challenges involved, especially with Ajit Pawar’s recent alignment with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). “Ajit Pawar has gone to the side of saffron; it seems difficult for him to leave the power structure and join forces with his uncle. But, let us hope for the best,” Memon said, leaving room for optimism amidst the uncertainty.
The political implications of a potential Pawar merger would be significant, especially in the context of Maharashtra’s evolving power dynamics. With both Raj Thackeray’s proposed alliance with Uddhav Thackeray and Ajit Pawar’s current alignment with the BJP, the future of Maharashtra’s political alliances remains unpredictable.
As political leaders navigate these shifting alliances, all eyes are now on whether the Pawar family can overcome their differences and chart a new course for the state’s political landscape.
