May 20: A lightning strike during a sudden thunderstorm late Sunday night killed at least 40 sheep and goats in the Hariganiwan forest area of Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district.
Officials said the animals belonged to Abdul Wahid Khattana, a nomadic herder from Sunderbani in Rajouri district, who is currently stationed at Chechi Pati, Hariganiwan, as part of his routine seasonal migration.
The bolt of lightning struck the open pasture where the livestock had been gathered, killing them on the spot. The thunderstorm was brief but intense, leaving little time for the herder to seek shelter for the animals.
Authorities have taken note of the incident and are evaluating the losses. Efforts are underway to extend possible relief to the affected herder.
