New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim held wide-ranging and productive talks on Sunday, reviewing the full spectrum of India–Malaysia relations and agreeing to further strengthen their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The two leaders discussed cooperation across critical areas including trade and investment, semiconductors, defence and security, maritime cooperation, energy and renewables, tourism, cultural exchanges, and digital and emerging technologies. The discussions underscored the growing convergence of interests between the two countries amid evolving regional and global dynamics.
Several important bilateral documents were exchanged during the meeting. These included agreements and memoranda of understanding on security cooperation, United Nations peacekeeping, semiconductors, health and medicine, disaster management, combating corruption, audio-visual co-production, vocational education, and social security arrangements for Indian workers in Malaysia.
In a significant cultural and educational initiative, Prime Minister Modi announced the establishment of a dedicated Thiruvalluvar Center at Universiti Malaya, along with the institution of Thiruvalluvar Scholarships. The initiatives are expected to promote the teachings of the Tamil philosopher-poet Thiruvalluvar and further strengthen people-to-people ties between the two nations.
Prime Minister Modi also announced that India will open its first Consulate in Malaysia, a move aimed at enhancing diplomatic engagement and facilitating closer connections between the peoples of both countries.
To boost financial and digital connectivity, the National Payments Corporation of India’s international arm (NIPL) and Malaysia’s PayNet agreed to collaborate on establishing bilateral payment linkages, including through India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). The initiative is expected to enhance ease of doing business and provide seamless, low-cost remittance and payment solutions for tourists, students, and businesses.
During the meeting, Malaysia completed all procedures to join the International Big Cat Alliance, reflecting its commitment to wildlife conservation. Additionally, the report of the 10th India–Malaysia CEO Forum was presented to the two leaders, highlighting the role of the private sector in driving bilateral economic cooperation.
The talks marked a significant step forward in India–Malaysia relations, reaffirming the shared commitment of both countries to deepen cooperation across strategic, economic, and cultural domains.
