SRINAGAR — Civil Defence mock drills scheduled across various districts of Jammu and Kashmir have been suspended in light of the ongoing Operation Sindoor and the heightened security situation along the border. The decision follows recent retaliatory strikes by the Indian Army inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), carried out in response to the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam. With the region placed on high alert, officials deemed it inappropriate to proceed with the public safety exercises at this time.
The drills were part of a larger, nationwide emergency preparedness initiative — the first such exercise since 1971 — aimed at enhancing civilian readiness in the event of hostile threats. The programme, slated to begin at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, was to include air-raid siren tests, evacuation simulations, and community training on maintaining and utilising “Sindoor” bunkers and trenches. While the drills have been put on hold in Jammu and Kashmir, similar activities are expected to take place as scheduled in other parts of the country.
