Jammu, June 25: Lieutenant Governor Shri Manoj Sinha on Wednesday inaugurated a special exhibition commemorating the 1975 Emergency at the Convention Centre in Jammu.
The exhibition, titled “Emergency: A Dark Chapter of Democracy”, aims to pay tribute to the victims and political prisoners of the 21-month-long Emergency period imposed in India on June 25, 1975.
Addressing the gathering, LG Sinha strongly condemned the imposition of the Emergency, calling it “the most inhuman act in Indian democratic history.”“In that darkest period in India’s democratic history, the soul of the country was crushed, civil liberties were attacked, constitutional safeguards were violated, and dreams of nation-building were buried,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of remembering the “torturous events” of the Emergency as a means of honoring those who stood up against authoritarianism and defended democratic values at great personal cost.
“While commemorating the torturous events to honor the victims of the Emergency, who made numerous sacrifices to safeguard constitutional values, we must resolve to deepen the foundations of our democracy and work with complete dedication for the greater success of our nation,” he stated.
Observing the day as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas (Constitutional Murder Day), LG Sinha urged citizens to reflect deeply on the lessons from that era and reaffirm their commitment to constitutional morality and democratic principles.
