KOTA, May 26: An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Jammu and Kashmir died by suicide in Kota, Rajasthan, on Sunday evening, marking the 15th such student death in the city this year and the second in the month of May.
The student, identified as Zeeshan, was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her paying guest accommodation near Pratap Chouraha, according to police.
Circle Inspector Ramesh Kavia of Mahaveer Nagar Police Station said Zeeshan had spoken to a relative shortly before the incident. “During the call, she indicated that she might take such a step before abruptly disconnecting,” Kavia said.
The body was sent for postmortem, and further investigation is underway.
Kota, widely known as the coaching capital of India, attracts thousands of students each year preparing for competitive exams like NEET and JEE. However, the city has also become synonymous with rising cases of student suicides, often linked to academic pressure and mental health challenges.
This latest incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for systemic reforms and strengthened mental health support in coaching hubs across the country.
