Ramban, April 21: In the wake of severe weather events across Jammu and Kashmir, including heavy rains, hailstorms, landslides, and cloudbursts, Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Banihal, Sajjad Shaheen, has called for urgent government action to address the mounting crisis in the region.

Shaheen expressed deep concern over the damage caused in areas such as Ramban, Banihal, Gool, and Dharamkund, where persistent downpours have triggered landslides, leading to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NHW) at several points.

“The highway blockade has paralyzed transport and supply routes, creating a humanitarian emergency. Movement of goods, people, and critical services has come to a standstill,” the MLA stated in an official communication.

To ease the growing distress, Shaheen urged the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister to coordinate with the central government for the temporary operationalisation of the Baramulla-Katra railway line. He emphasized that rail connectivity could serve as a vital alternative for mobility and relief efforts until the NHW is fully restored.

Calling the situation unprecedented, the legislator appealed for the destruction to be officially categorized as a natural disaster. He reported widespread losses, noting that dozens of houses, farmlands, orchards, vehicles, and livestock have been damaged—particularly highlighting Dharamkund, where 37 homes were reportedly impacted by a landslide triggered by a cloudburst.

Shaheen also pushed for a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package, particularly for transport workers, farmers, and daily wage earners who have faced significant economic hardships due to the disruption.

“The administration must act quickly to evaluate the damages, offer immediate aid, and implement long-term support measures for those affected,” he said, stressing the urgent need for both infrastructure repair and humanitarian relief.
