Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have called on the Centre to abolish the NEET-UG examination following the alleged 2026 paper leak controversy, urging a return to state-level medical entrance tests.

Addressing a press conference in Bengaluru, Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil described the leak as a “grave injustice” to students and accused the Narendra Modi-led government of jeopardising the future of aspiring doctors.

The Karnataka government has demanded that NEET be scrapped from the 2026 academic year and that states regain the authority to conduct their own Common Entrance Tests (CETs) for medical admissions. Patil argued that Karnataka’s CET system is more effective and transparent than NEET and said the state had repeatedly urged the Centre to adopt a similar model nationally.
