Jammu, Feb 18: Ahead of Ramadan, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Jammu and Kashmir launched a major enforcement drive against unsafe food practices in the Jammu Division, seizing large quantities of spoiled meat and fish from a warehouse in Jammu.

Acting on directions of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, the Food Safety Organisation’s enforcement team conducted a surprise inspection at M/s India Fish Company warehouse. During the raid, officials seized and destroyed five quintals (500 kg) of decomposed meat and nearly 6,000 kg of raw fish deemed unfit for human consumption.

The operation was supervised by FDA Commissioner Smita Sethi and led by the Deputy Commissioner, Food Safety Division Jammu, with support from the district administration, J&K Police, and the Jammu Municipal Corporation.

Officials reported that around 150 cartons of fish, transported by road from Andhra Pradesh on February 10 without proper refrigeration, were found in unsafe condition. Samples have been collected for laboratory analysis, with preliminary findings indicating the fish was spoiled.

In addition, approximately 500 kg of rotten meat emitting a foul smell was seized from the premises at the cost of the Food Business Operator.

Legal action has been initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Authorities have booked the operator for violating food safety regulations, maintaining insanitary conditions, and storing and supplying unsafe food. The establishment’s licence is also liable for cancellation.
