New Delhi:
In a major crackdown on illegal online betting and gambling, the Government of India on Tuesday blocked access to 242 unauthorised betting and gambling website links under the newly enforced Online Gaming Act, officials said.

With the latest action, the total number of illegal betting and gambling platforms taken down across the country has crossed 7,800, marking one of the largest digital enforcement drives against unregulated online gaming.

According to official sources, the move is aimed at protecting users—particularly the youth—from the growing financial, psychological and social harms associated with illegal online betting. Authorities have expressed concern over the rapid rise of such platforms, many of which operate without regulatory oversight and are often linked to money laundering, fraud and addiction.

“The government remains committed to creating a safe and responsible online gaming ecosystem. Unregulated betting platforms pose serious risks to individuals and society at large,” an official statement said.

The blocked websites were found violating provisions of the Online Gaming Act by promoting illegal wagering activities and bypassing compliance norms. Internet service providers (ISPs) have been directed to ensure immediate enforcement of the ban.

Officials also urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with unauthorised gaming platforms, warning that users may face financial losses and legal consequences. The government is expected to continue monitoring digital platforms and take further action against violators in the coming weeks.

The crackdown forms part of a broader strategy to regulate India’s fast-growing online gaming sector while distinguishing legitimate skill-based gaming from illegal betting and gambling operations.
