December 6- Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Saturday praised Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah for his “focused” and “determined” efforts to revive the Union Territory’s economy, which has faced a major setback following the recent decline in the tourism sector.
Speaking at an event, Sitharaman acknowledged the challenges J&K has encountered in recent months, especially the severe impact on tourism — a key pillar of the region’s economy. She commended Abdullah for adopting a proactive strategy aimed at stabilising the economic situation and restoring public confidence.
The Finance Minister said the Chief Minister’s commitment to accelerating recovery efforts, strengthening tourism infrastructure, and supporting affected stakeholders reflects “responsible and responsive governance.”
She added that the Centre remains committed to supporting Jammu and Kashmir’s developmental needs and ensuring that the region’s economic revival progresses without hindrance.
The Jammu and Kashmir government has recently introduced several measures to boost tourism, promote local businesses, and enhance employment opportunities, as part of its broader economic restoration plan.
