Ganderbal, J&K | July 22, 2025 – Reacting to the sudden resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday expressed concern over the development, calling it unprecedented and wishing Dhankhar a long and healthy life. “This is the first time a Vice President has resigned in such a manner. Unfortunately, his health did not allow him to work further,” Abdullah said. “Hopefully, the next Vice President will do justice to the post and the office.”
The resignation, announced on Monday evening as the Monsoon Session 2025 got underway in both Houses of Parliament, came as a surprise to many in political and constitutional circles. Dhankhar’s exit has created a sudden vacancy in one of the highest constitutional posts in the country.
Sources said health reasons were behind the decision, and tributes to his tenure poured in from across the political spectrum. Lawmakers are now awaiting the announcement of a new nominee for the post, which plays a key role in India’s legislative functioning.
