New Delhi, Jan 15: An Air India A350 aircraft operating a Delhi–New York (JFK) flight sustained damage to its right engine after ingesting a cargo container while taxiing at Delhi airport amid dense fog on Thursday morning, according to a source.
The airline said Flight AI101 had earlier returned to Delhi shortly after takeoff due to the unexpected closure of Iranian airspace, which affected its planned route. After landing, the aircraft encountered a foreign object during taxiing, resulting in engine damage.
“The aircraft was safely positioned at the designated parking stand, ensuring the safety of all passengers and crew,” Air India said in a statement.
The aircraft has been grounded for a detailed investigation, and the airline warned of possible disruptions on select routes operated by its A350 fleet. Air India added that it is assisting affected passengers with alternative travel arrangements or refunds.
