The Directorate of Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir, today marked National Handloom Day with a vibrant Craft Bazaar at Kashmir Haat, Srinagar, celebrating the region’s rich tradition of handloom and handicrafts.
The event drew artisans from across the Valley, who showcased a wide range of handmade Kashmiri products — from intricate Pashmina shawls to hand-knotted carpets, papier-mâché, wood carvings, and embroideries — reflecting the unique craftsmanship passed down through generations.
Speaking to the media, Director Handicrafts & Handloom, Kashmir, emphasized the department’s commitment to preserving the authenticity of Kashmiri crafts. “A strict crackdown has been launched against traders selling machine-made products under the guise of handmade. This malpractice poses a serious threat to our artisan legacy and erodes customer trust,” he said.
He further highlighted various government initiatives aimed at uplifting artisans, particularly the youth. “We are offering schemes that include collateral-free loans of up to ₹20 lakh for those wishing to start their own ventures. The goal is to encourage entrepreneurship among local craftsmen and promote sustainable livelihoods.”
The Craft Bazaar saw an enthusiastic turnout from both locals and tourists, providing artisans a direct platform to connect with buyers and promote genuine handmade products.
