U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Friday that President Donald Trump will abandon efforts to negotiate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within days if there are no clear indications that a resolution is achievable.
“We won’t continue with this effort for weeks or months. We need to quickly assess—within a matter of days—whether an agreement is possible in the coming weeks. If it seems feasible, we’ll proceed. If not, we’ll redirect our focus to other priorities,” Rubio explained in Paris after meeting with European and Ukrainian leaders.
Although Trump has expressed continued interest in brokering a deal, he is prepared to pivot if immediate progress isn’t seen.
During his presidential campaign, Trump vowed to bring an end to the conflict within his first day in office. However, upon assuming the presidency, he moderated this claim, suggesting a resolution could be reached by April or May, as the complexities of the situation grew.
Rubio’s comments reflect growing frustration over the lack of progress in resolving a series of significant global challenges.
