New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a collective effort to combat obesity, emphasizing the need to reduce oil consumption in food. In his Mann Ki Baat address on Sunday, he urged people to cut their oil intake by 10% and pass on the challenge to others.
Citing a study, Modi highlighted that one in eight people suffer from obesity, with cases doubling in recent years and quadrupling among children. He noted that in 2022, around 2.5 billion people worldwide were overweight, warning that obesity contributes to serious health issues like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension.
Olympic javelin champion Neeraj Chopra and world boxing champion Nikhat Zareen also lent their voices to the cause, advocating for healthy eating and active lifestyles. Cardiac surgeon Dr. Devi Shetty reinforced the message, stating that obesity is no longer a cosmetic issue but a serious medical concern driven by excessive consumption of carbohydrates and oil.
Modi encouraged small dietary changes to build a healthier future and proposed a challenge—reducing oil consumption by 10%—as a simple yet effective step in tackling obesity nationwide.
