Satya Pal Malik, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 79 after a prolonged illness. According to his staff, Malik had been under intensive care at Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in New Delhi for an extended period. He breathed his last at 1:12 pm, as confirmed by a PTI report.

Following the news of his demise, condolences from across the political spectrum flooded social media, with leaders acknowledging his contributions to Indian politics and his outspoken nature.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his sorrow, stating, “Saddened by the passing away of Shri Satyapal Malik Ji. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti.”

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared her condolences, describing Malik as a strong advocate for farmers. “The news of the passing of the vocal voice of the country’s farmers and former Governor Shri Satyapal Singh Malik Ji is extremely saddening,” she posted.

West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee paid a heartfelt tribute, highlighting Malik’s bold statements on sensitive national issues. “Saddened by the demise of Satya Pal Malik ji, former Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, who became famous in Indian politics by uttering some truths, which few dare to do. He spoke bravely in support of Indian farmers’ protests and raised uncomfortable questions about the Pulwama attack. Such courage deserves our salute. May his soul rest in peace,” she wrote.

Former Delhi Chief Minister and AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal also honoured Malik’s legacy, calling him a rare figure in Indian politics. “Indian politics has lost a personality who had the courage to speak the truth even in the face of power,” Kejriwal stated, adding that Malik was not just an experienced politician but one who prioritized the nation’s interests without fear.

Malik, who held gubernatorial posts in multiple states including Jammu and Kashmir, Goa, and Meghalaya, was known for his candid views and outspoken criticism on various political and national matters. His passing marks the end of a political career marked by bold assertions and an unwavering commitment to what he believed was right.
