SRINAGAR: Ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Lok Sabha Opposition Leader Rahul Gandhi have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir and the inclusion of Ladakh under the Sixth Schedule.
Calling the demand “legitimate and constitutionally grounded,” the Congress leaders highlighted that J&K is the only instance in independent India where a state was downgraded to a Union Territory, prompting widespread calls for reversal.
They reminded the PM of his past assurances—his May 2024 speech in Bhubaneswar calling statehood a “solemn promise,” and his September 2024 rally in Srinagar reaffirming the commitment. They also cited the Centre’s submission to the Supreme Court promising early restoration.
