SRINAGAR: A 49-year-old pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh died of a suspected heart attack while undertaking the Amarnath Yatra in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district on Sunday.

The deceased has been identified as Rakesh Kumar Soni, son of Shehnarawan Soni, a resident of Pantnagar in Uttar Pradesh.

Officials said Soni complained of severe chest pain while on the pilgrimage route. He was immediately taken to District Hospital Ganderbal and later referred to the Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) in Soura for advanced treatment.

“However, doctors at SKIMS declared him brought dead upon arrival,” an official said.

Authorities have initiated the necessary medico-legal procedures.
