SRINAGAR, July 3: National Conference leader and MLA Salman Sagar has written to the Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, requesting the extension of the traditional 11th Muharram-ul-Haram procession route in Srinagar.
In his communication, Sagar sought permission for the religious procession to proceed from Sheeshgari Mohalla Khanyar to Chinkra Mohalla Habba Kadal—an extension he said reflects the community’s deep-rooted religious and cultural sentiments.
“I have written to LG @manojsinha_ seeking extension of the traditional 11th Muharram-ul-Haram procession route from Sheeshgari Mohalla Khanyar to Chinkra Mohalla Habba Kadal. Hopeful that the request will be considered in good faith and the extension permitted this year,” Sagar stated in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). The demand for allowing traditional Muharram processions through the old city areas of Srinagar has long been a matter of concern for the Shia community, which views the restrictions as a curtailment of religious freedom.
