SRINAGAR: Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma on Wednesday took over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Udhampur-based Northern Command of the Indian Army, officials confirmed.

He succeeds Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, who demitted office after a 15-month tenure. Lt Gen Kumar is set to retire on April 30, marking the end of an illustrious military career spanning over 30 years.

Lt Gen Sharma, a seasoned infantry officer, brings with him a wealth of operational experience. Over the years, he has participated in several critical military operations, including Operation Pawan, Meghdoot, Rakshak, and Parakram.

In addition to commanding troops in diverse and challenging environments, Lt Gen Sharma has held several high-profile appointments. These include Director General of Military Operations and senior roles in the Military Secretary Branch. Most recently, he served as the Director General of Information Warfare at the newly established Information Directorate at Army Headquarters in New Delhi.

His appointment comes at a crucial time for the strategically significant Northern Command, which oversees operations in Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, and along the Line of Control.
