Pahalgam, April 22 — A suspected terrorist attack in the picturesque Baisaran Valley of Pahalgam claimed the life of a tourist and left several others injured on Monday, casting a shadow over Jammu and Kashmir’s peak tourist season.Gunfire echoed through the upper meadows of Baisaran — a popular destination accessible only by foot or horseback — sending panic among visitors. Security personnel and medical teams rushed to the scene shortly after the incident.Preliminary reports indicate that the assailants were dressed in camouflage, suggesting the attack was carefully planned and deliberately targeted. The incident comes at a sensitive time as preparations are underway for the annual Amarnath Yatra. This year’s 38-day pilgrimage is scheduled to commence on July 3, with one of the two main routes — a 48-kilometre stretch — beginning from Pahalgam. The other, a shorter but steeper 14-kilometre path, starts from Baltal in Ganderbal district.Known for its pristine beauty, serene forests, and lush meadows, Pahalgam is one of Kashmir’s most visited tourist spots. Monday’s attack has sparked fresh concerns over security in the Valley amid growing footfall from domestic and international travellers.Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the perpetrators, and a search operation is currently underway in the area.
