Washington, Apr 15: U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has emphasized that obtaining a visa to enter the United States is a privilege, not an inherent right. His remarks come as the Trump administration intensifies scrutiny on foreign students and clamps down on pro-Palestinian demonstrations, particularly those taking place on college campuses.

In an opinion piece published by Fox News, Rubio underscored that entry into the United States is not guaranteed to anyone. “Visiting America is not a right; it’s a privilege granted to individuals who uphold our laws and share our values,” he wrote.

This statement comes in the wake of the administration’s nationwide effort to curb rising pro-Palestinian activism, especially within academic institutions. Back in February, a multi-agency task force was established to combat antisemitism, with plans to investigate incidents at ten universities, including prestigious institutions like Harvard and Columbia.

Rubio also criticized international students for their alleged involvement in disrupting campus life and for engaging in behavior he claims intimidates Jewish students. He warned that the government’s security assessments extend beyond the initial visa approval process.

“The scrutiny doesn’t stop once a visa is issued,” Rubio stated. “Foreign nationals shutting down elite American campuses and harassing students is unacceptable, and the Trump administration will act decisively to prevent such conduct.”

Citing the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), Rubio noted that any foreign national found supporting terrorism or affiliated organizations—such as Hamas—is deemed ineligible for a U.S. visa. He added that the law empowers the government to revoke visas if individuals fail to meet ongoing eligibility standards.

“Visa holders are expected to abide by American laws and maintain appropriate conduct during their stay,” he said. “This is essential to ensuring the safety of both U.S. citizens and lawful visitors.”

Rubio concluded by reaffirming the Trump administration’s firm stance on immigration enforcement, describing it as “unprecedented and unwavering.”
