Chandigarh/Amritsar, May 19: Punjab Police’s Counter Intelligence unit in Amritsar has busted a module allegedly linked to Babbar Khalsa International with the arrest of two accused and recovery of two hand grenades, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said on Tuesday.
The arrested accused were identified as Ajay of Bazigar Mohalla in Ajnala and Jodhbir Singh of Fattewal Kalan, both residents of Amritsar. Police also impounded a black Hero Splendor motorcycle used by the accused.
According to the DGP, preliminary investigation revealed that the recovered grenades were part of a larger conspiracy aimed at targeting government institutions and disturbing peace and law and order in Punjab.
Police said the operation was launched following intelligence inputs that foreign-based handlers had supplied grenades to local associates and instructed them to coordinate with another operative near Loharka Road in Amritsar. Acting on the tip-off, police teams laid a naka and intercepted the suspects, recovering two hand grenades from their possession.
Further investigation is underway to trace forward and backward linkages and identify other members of the network.
A case has been registered at SSOC Amritsar under the Explosive Substances Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
